When your client wants to put their sessions on “Hold.”

Here's an article I've wanted to write for a LONG time now.
Well, I finally did. And I'm extremely proud to share it today.
If you're trying to improve your own health and fitness… it's an

if they "start fresh", they'll find the magical "right time" to begin.

But, unfortunately, there will never be a perfect time to hit "play"
again. You and I both know — perfection just doesn't happen in real

So, how do you respond when your client wants to press "pause" on their
health and fitness efforts?

You simply help them "adjust the dial". Here's how…

The key to helping your clients reach their goals: Small improvements
done consistently over time.

So today, let's shift your clients from an "all-or-nothing" mentality…
which usually gets them "nothing"…

…to an "always-something" approach, where your clients can still make

…even amid vacations, demanding work schedules, family demands,
injuries, emergencies.

If you can just keep them moving forward, no matter what happens, no
pause buttons, no do-overs… your clients WIN. And you win too.

Good Advice to Follow When Chatting with Clients

Training clients often involves entertaining and listening to their “stories”.  We have all sat through sessions where regardless of how intense, clients still want to talk and babble.   Depending on the day, I may or may not be in the mood to hear how great their last trip was.  My mental response “I was here trying to fill your time slot so I can make my bills, thank you very much.”

However, the opposite is true; clients may not be in the mood to hear my stories or my life’s B.S.

Shocking as this may sound; clients do not always want to hear what you have to say!I know, it is a real blow to your EGO that people my find your words pointless.  I guess it is all in the day.

Keep in mind that you should always separate your personal and professional life.  No matter how thin the line, or how “cool” the client is.  If you are clouding sessions with you personal issues both mentally and verbally then Stop it.

Keep some space in your sessions between your service and your life.  Deliver the value and the experience the client’s deserve.

Part of servicing the client is to be entertaining along with providing amazing physical content.  If you want to chat call a friend, leave it out of the session.

Don’t get me wrong, I communicate some of my life to clients in session but not everything.  The fact is most sessions group or personal, should be consumed with “working out” not hanging out.

BTW – if you have other trainer’s in your business then keep an eye out for this.

Here is a challenge and some advice for you regarding this little issue.

The Challenge and the Advice:

  • For the next few sessions monitor session chatter.
  • Understand that you are there to create the exercise experience not talk to a friend.
  • See if you can skew the chatter to get client’s more motivated.
  • Limit how deep you go into your personal life.  (Client’s only need to know so much)
  • Always try to reverse the information exchange so they are telling you something vs. you blabbering on about your issues.

Last point- The rates you charge and the respect you deserve are directly related to how professional you are in session. Blabbering on about how traumatic your situation is or how great you are is not the purpose of the session.  It is hard to ask for respect and $150.00 when you spent the last hour sulking to your client about your life.  Client perception is part of staying successful in modern fitness times.

A trainer or coach is there to: teach, coach, guide, motivate, monitor, adjust, and exchange compensation for an amazing exercise experience that is building on the next.

To all Registered dietitions who support this assault on other nutrition professionals….

I respect your degree and RD but that doesn't make you a sports nutritionist.  That is why there are organizations like the ISSN and the NASN.  It is a different scope.  I never give medical advice or medical nutritional therapy, that is your job, exclusively.   Fat loss,  lean gain, performance and recovery from exercise are common goals that personal trainers and coaches are constantly confronted with.  Better to educate and equip them with a protocol that is safe and effective than to have them just teach or follow a fad. 
Rather than spend time, money and resources to stop other organizations from helping people, the ADA should embrace our cumulative effort to fight the obesity epidemic in America.  Dieticians can't do it alone.  There are too few of them.  We can all help each other!  Its like the Vatican trying to prevent the reformation all over again.  Let's stop arguing about the little things and equip each other for effectiveness.  There is no place for fraud or fad diets.  There is a place for certified personal trainers, LPSN's,  ISSN certified specialists, Nd's and other health and fitness professionals to give the end consumer the tools for a health lifestyle.
You can't argue with that.  None of us are selling cigarettes.  We are all trying sincerely help people with the right information and the right tools.

Blogger Giving Advice Resists State’s: Get a License

WASHINGTON — Steve Cooksey eats what he calls a cave man diet — lots of meat and greens, no bread or pasta. He says it has helped him conquer life-threatening diabetes.

But when he wrote about his experiences and offered advice on his Web site, officials in North Carolina said he was breaking the law by “providing nutrition care services without a license.”

Charla M. Burill, the executive director of the North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition, called Mr. Cooksey in January to tell him so. The conversation was by all accounts civil, and Ms. Burill had a state law on her side.

About a week after they talked, Ms. Burill sent Mr. Cooksey pages from his site liberally annotated in red ink. She said that “writing a blog on your beliefs” was fine. But Mr. Cooksey’s Dear Abby-style advice column was unlawful. So was a paid life-coaching service.

“You are no longer just providing information when you do this,” she wrote of the column and the service. “You are assessing and counseling, both of which require a license.”

Indeed, a North Carolina law says that “assessing the nutritional needs of individuals and groups” without a license is a crime. Many other states license nutritionists and dietitians, but the North Carolina law seems to be among the stricter ones.

In her markup of Mr. Cooksey’s site, Ms. Burill underlined examples of unlawful advice, including this one: “I do suggest that your friend eat as I do and exercise the best they can.”

Mr. Cooksey reluctantly made the requested changes. Then he filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court in Charlotte, N.C., saying his First Amendment rights had been violated.

“Cooksey’s advice,” his lawyers wrote, “ultimately amounts to recommendations about what to buy at the grocery store — more steaks and avocados and less pasta, for example.”

“The First Amendment simply does not allow North Carolina to criminalize something as commonplace as advice about diet,” they added.

Mr. Cooksey is represented by the Institute for Justice, a libertarian group that often takes issue with employment licensing laws, usually on the ground that they interfere with economic competition. In Mr. Cooksey’s case, it also argues that the North Carolina law interferes with the marketplace of ideas.

Jeff Rowes, one of Mr. Cooksey’s lawyers, said there should be only a limited role for government regulation of speech about food.

It is appropriate, he said, to license people who work in clinical or institutional settings like hospitals, prisons and schools. He added that there are some professional relationships, involving “people who have genuinely surrendered their judgment” to an expert, where licensing may be appropriate.

In general, though, he said, “people are allowed to give other people advice.”

Karen Gale of Indiana said she was pleased with the advice she received from Mr. Cooksey after getting to know him on Facebook. “I am in disbelief that in the United States it is against the law for a friend to give another friend uncompensated advice about what food to eat,” she said in a sworn statement filed in the case.

In his lawsuit, Mr. Cooksey, a 51-year-old service manager at a medical equipment company, said that forbidding his “personal, ongoing, uncompensated mentorship of Karen Gale and other friends like her is an unconstitutional prohibition on something that Americans have done since the inception of the United States: share advice among friends, acquaintances, readers or family about what is the healthiest way to eat.”

His defense of selling that same advice was a little less ringing, though he said the First Amendment protected that, too.

Ms. Burill declined to comment, and one of her lawyers directed me to the papers the North Carolina board has filed in court. The board has also posted a statement on its Web site “concerning Steve Cooksey, an unlicensed person.”

In the statement, the board said it had not harassed Mr. Cooksey or threatened to shut down his site. It said that it had never rendered a formal decision, and that its complaint was closed.

“As with all complaints,” Ms. Burill wrote to Mr. Cooksey in April, “the board reserves the right to continue to monitor this situation.”

The case is, in the words of Justice Byron R. White in a 1985 concurrence in a United States Supreme Court case about investment newsletters, “a collision between the power of government to license and regulate those who would pursue a profession or vocation and the rights of freedom of speech and of the press guaranteed by the First Amendment.”

Justice White, joined by two other justices, proposed a distinction that may help the board’s side of the argument. He said the government may regulate personalized advice from someone “who takes the affairs of a client personally in hand and purports to exercise judgment on behalf of the client in the light of the client’s individual needs and circumstances.”

But it is not clear that one-on-one advice is the right place to draw the constitutional line.

“So long as knowledge is potentially relevant to the formation of public opinion, I do not see in principle why it should constitutionally matter whether it is distributed to one person or to a thousand,” Robert C. Post, dean of Yale Law School, wrote in a recent book, “Democracy, Expertise, Academic Freedom.”

In an interview, Mr. Cooksey said he had an unorthodox litigation strategy. “I hope we lose in the first round,” he said. “I hope we go to the Supreme Court. Our blog traffic has gone through the roof.”

As a NCSF Personal trainer, my business would be nothing if I could not offer dietary advice. Most people come to me trying to lose weight. Exercise is only about 30% of the prescription. Diet and lifestyle choices make up the rest. Most people can't afford to have a different expert for all of their needs. So, I will quit giving nutritional advice as soon as everyone else quits telling people to exercise.
